Getting children to brush their teeth can be a daily struggle. However, there are some tricks and tips that make the process easier. Get a fun toothbrush.
Let your child pick out the toothbrush they will use. This helps them feel involved and also gets them excited. There are so many toothbrushes with characters and/or colors that appeal to children.
Choose a fun flavored toothpaste.
Toothpaste comes in all sorts of flavors these days. Many children do not care for mint flavor. Again, involve them in the process of choosing a toothpaste they like will make them more likely to want to brush their teeth.
Use timers and/or music
Brushing teeth for the appropriate amount of time is a challenge at any age. Colorful timers and/or musical timers are good tools to brush effectively and be entertained. Playing music of any kind as a “timer” is also helpful.
Use a motivational chart
Using something as simple as a check mark or a sticker on a daily chart gives children a sense of accomplishment and is also motivating!
Set an example.
Modeling good behavior and habits is a great way to get children to do what you want them to. When children see parents brushing and flossing, they will likely want to do that, too! Additionally, taking turns with younger children who are unable to brush on their own is also helpful. Allowing them to be a part of the process keeps them interested.
Educate
It’s never too early to start explaining the importance of removing bacteria from teeth in an effort to keep teeth and gums healthy. There are ways to convey this information at any level.
